Benchmarking

DDO works on a d20 system, which means that a true jack-of-all-trades is impossible. Your abilities will need to hit certain levels or they might as well not exist; in fact, you would be much better off ignoring them completely and save your build resources to bolster the more viable aspects of your character.

Benchmarking fundamentally seeks to reduce the number of build objectives to a more achievable level.

The best way to begin doing this is to think about where you want to eventually ply your trade. If you know exactly who you intend to takedown - even better! Let's say you want to equip your build with some melee prowess: then you will need to ensure that the to-hit bonus you will ultimately reach is somewhere in the range of said target's AC.

Disappointment strikes: tumble score insufficient to flip.

You might need to make a tradeoff here between flavor and effectiveness if you think that your reference character has too much on his plate to cover adequately with the given resources.

This highlights the importance of synergy in a build. When different features share much of the same build costs, you are essentially getting a buy-one-get-one-free deal, allowing you to keep another feature of your build.

Archibalde, as a character built for casual play, should require as little effort in logistics as possible, so that I can log in and immediately run a quest without bothering about the more boring aspects of equipment and inventory. I hence took UMD ("strong mastery over all things magical" in the Concept section) away from the build goals, since its usefulness lies predominantly in the use of consumables, which adds to logistics issues and hence is something I don't intend to use too much of. Along the way, this saves the effort that would otherwise be required to give him a high UMD score, allowing him to dedicate build points away from Charisma, skillpoints away from UMD, and save a feat from not having Skill Focus: UMD.

Note that generally, not having UMD is a bad build decision, for it is a skill with great utility.
